There is a 'The' in Gambia

The December 2004 Philatelic Exporter reports: Through the Universal Postal Union, the postal administration of The Gambia has protested the existence of many unauthorized stamp issues.

Most, if not all, bear the incorrect country inscription 'Gambia', whereas officially produced issues are inscribed 'The Gambia'

All the following allegedly illegal issues of stamps and miniature sheets bear the year '2003': Prehistoric World, Birds of Prey, Chinese New Year, Oceans, Polar Birds, Orchids, Looney Tunes, Games & Sports, John Paul II/Red Cross, New Cinema, Nude Art, Vincent van Gogh, Great Composers, Lighthouses, Monuments of Egypt, Aircraft/Rotary, September 11 2001, Classic Actresses, Pin Up Art

Any information concerning the source of these and any other suspect issues should contact Mrs. Maria Liberia, International Bureau of the UPU, Case postale, 3000 Berne 15, Switzerland, telephone: +41 31 350 32 15/350 31 11; fax: +4131 350 31 10; e-mail maria.libera@upu.int
